What to Expect in an Interpersonal Therapy Program

Developed in the 1970s by Gerald Klerman and Myrna Weissman, interpersonal therapy has roots in cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic approaches, and attachment theory. It is grounded in the biopsychosocial model and recognizes that psychological symptoms are often related to relationship conflicts and issues.

With guidance from a supportive, non-judgmental therapist, clients explore grief, attachment issues, stressful life events and transitions, and past and present interpersonal challenges. Some of the tools used to resolve these issues include the interpersonal inventory, communication analysis, and the interpersonal triad.

The Interpersonal Inventory

This is an extended version of a psychological assessment with a social element. The therapist performing this will take a look at all of the important people in your life. They’ll examine those relationships and evaluate the quality of them, seeing if something in one of your relationships has contributed to your current mental health issues.

Communication Analysis

This is all about improving communication skills. You’ll provide your therapist with a full “movie script” of a conversation you’ve had with someone in your life. The therapist asks you to explain what you think you communicated and then provides their input on what they think was actually communicated.

The Interpersonal Triad

The interpersonal triad shows the IPT therapy program’s theory of distress. They theorize that acute interpersonal crisis, attachment and biopsychosocial/cultural/spiritual vulnerabilities and strengths, and inadequate social support make up a distress triad. They use this model to figure out how to treat what you’re going through.
