10 Celebrities Whose Names Have Been Sullied by Addiction to Drugs and Alcohol

Celebrities battling addiction to drugs, alcohol or prescription medication is nothing new in this day and age. Now it seems that there are some celebrities whose careers which were once the center piece of their fame have taken a back seat to their reported struggles with the disease of addiction. Lindsey Lohan for example was once known famous for her role in the remake of the Disney movie The Parent TrapMean Girls etc. is now known more for her alleged  battle with addiction. Lindsey is not alone in this as there are many other celebrities whose very well reported struggles with addiction have come to define their public image.

10. Dennis Rodman

Dennis Rodman, once known by his nickname “The Worm”, was famous for his rebounding and defensive prowess on the basketball court. A five time NBA champion with the Detroit Pistons and the Chicago Bulls, Dennis has become known more so in recent years for his purported struggles with addiction, specifically alcoholism and a stint on the popular reality show Celebrity Rehab.

9. David Hasselhoff

In the 1980s David Hasselhoff was famous the world over as Michael Knight driver of the super advanced car K.I.T.T.  in the NBC TV show Knight Rider. David’s fame continued in the 90s as lifeguard Mitch Buchannon on the syndicated TV series Baywatch. Hasselhoff even enjoyed a success as singer in the late 80s early 90s in Germany. In recent years a video shot by Hasselhoff’s daughter depicting him intoxicated and attempting to eat a hamburger and is repeated, yet often disputed, reported hospitalizations for alcohol poisoning have come to dominate his public image.

8.Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston was the first female artist to have an album at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart  with 1987’s  Whitney,her second studio album. Whitney has sold over 170 million albums and singles worldwide and her rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” from the 1991 Super Bowl also went on to become a hit on the pop charts reaching #20. In more recent years her personal problems such as her tumultuous marriage to Bobby Brown which ended in 2006 and alleged drug abuse have come to define her life. In a 2009 interview with Oprah Winfrey Whitney admitted her mother turned up at her home with an injunction and ordered her to get help.

7. Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse, a five time Grammy award winner, has become known more for her reported stays in rehab and legal problems, than for her singing in recent years. Her debut album Frank and the follow up Back to Blackwere both critical and commercial successes, with her most well known song ironically titled “Rehab” being her biggest American hit to date. As late as 2009 it was reported that Amy was in rehab after having as her father put it “A slight step backwards.”

6. Charlie Sheen

Charlie Sheen comes from a family of entertainers with his father and siblings being well know actors and entertainers in their own right. Charlie Sheen rose to fame in the 80s staring in such hits as PlatoonWall Street, andMajor League.  Charlie went on to have success on television staring in the sitcoms Spin City and Two and Half Men. More recently he’s been in the news for checking himself into rehab in 2010, a more infamous stay in rehab occurred in 1998 after his father issued a public plea for him to get help and an arrest warrant being issued for him.

5. Lawrence Taylor

Lawrence Taylor or “L.T.” as he was more popularly known is a member of the Hall of Fame and is considered by many as one of the greatest defensive players of all time. Lawrence has had a controversial public image as he has admitted to using cocaine as early as his second year in the NFL. L.T. was suspended several times for violating the NFL substance abuse policy and in recent years has been in the news for leaving the scene of an accident in Florida and being charged with statutory rape of a 16-year old prostitute.

4. Darryl Strawberry

Darryl Strawberry was a well known baseball player, having led the New York Mets and Yankees to World Series championships. Drug abuse problems continued to plague Darryl throughout his playing career, having been suspended from baseball at the beginning of the 1995 season after his playing days he was allegedly arrested for leaving a Florida treatment facility in 2000 to do drugs with a female friend.

3. Andy Dick

Andy Dick stared on the sketch comedy program The Ben Stiller Show on the Fox network in the early 90s. Andy went on to appear in several other television shows, the NannyDavid Letterman and the Andy Dick Show. Recently Andy has become more known for his reported stays in rehab and his erratic behavior which include being accused of biting the hand of a New York Times columnist, and the alleged groping and attempted kissing of  a security guard at a Georgia club.

2. Courtney Love

Courtney Love best known as the lead singer for Hole and for her marriage to late Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain has struggled very publicly with her reported addiction. In 2003 it was reported that  Courtney Love was treated for an overdose related to the use of oxycotin, she reportedly walked away from treatment at that time. Courtney’s alleged addiction to drugs has lead to reported stays in rehab in 2003, 2005 and in 2006.

1. Lindsey Lohan

Lindsey Lohan was once known for being an up and coming actress with roles in the remake of the “Parent Trap” and “Mean Girls”. Lindsey has had a very public battle with addiction having gone to rehab a reported 4 times in the last 4 years. Lindsey’s most recent reported stay in rehab occurred in July 2010, staying 3 weeks in a UCLA treatment program.

This is a very sobering list of people struggling with addiction to drugs, alcohol and other substances, who were once known more for their talents than for their struggles with addiction. Each person on this list has sought out treatment, some numerous times and while recovery is a lifelong commitment it begins with first seeking help. Let’s hope these people continue to seek help and move forward in their recovery from the horrible disease of addiction.
