Long-Term Effects of Alcohol Abuse
The negative effects of alcohol abuse go far beyond nasty hangovers and beer guts. Over time, alcohol can wreak havoc on the body, contributing to more than 200 diseases and injury-related health conditions. Heavy alcohol use also negatively affects your mind. It is associated with increased depression and other co-occurring mental disorders, job and relationship problems, and violent behavior. Excessive drinking — which includes binge and heavy drinking — is far more common than alcoholism, so even drinkers who aren’t dependent on alcohol are still at risk for serious alcohol-related health issues. Some people with alcohol use disorder will require inpatient rehab and medical detox to heal from the ravages of alcohol use.
