Women who enter treatment for issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, stress disorders, sexual infidelity, partner betrayal, substance abuse and disordered eating behaviors often have struggles with self-esteem and self-worth. They may have been verbally or physically battered and may suffer from the emotional aftermath of trauma that could have roots extending back to childhood. In tandem with other therapeutic approaches, women’s empowerment classes can help clients develop self-esteem, set boundaries and effectively communicate their needs.
What Are Women’s Empowerment Classes?
Women who are not yet comfortable speaking up for themselves or are unable or unwilling at first to make comments in group or during individual therapy may need ongoing support in order to begin their healing journey. At Promises Malibu Vista we offer women’s empowerment classes as part of group therapy to help clients repair or build a healthy self-perception, gain knowledge of helpful resources, and begin participating in social settings and gatherings.
In a safe and supportive environment, women learn that they have the ability to:
- Develop and maintain boundaries
- Assert their needs
- Think positively about their ability to create change
- Learn skills for claiming their personal power
- Develop a healthy self-image
- Participate in activities that contribute to their ongoing health and healing
- Learn to let go of self-consciousness that holds them back from getting their needs met
Along with individual and group therapy, participation in women’s empowerment classes adds to our clients’ abilities to venture out on their own again following treatment. They come to recognize that they have value and that they’re deserving of love and trust. At first they may be fearful of attempting to find their voice, but they soon learn that what they have to say is important and that they are worthy.
