Substance Abuse and Intimacy Disorders

Substance Abuse and Intimacy Disorders Program at Promises Malibu

The Substance Abuse and Intimacy Disorders (SAID) Program at Promises Malibu is a men’s substance abuse treatment program with a dual focus on the drug and alcohol abuse/addiction that often occurs in combination with problem patterns of sex, relationships and intimacy.

Currently, there is no other U.S. substance abuse rehabilitation facility that utilizes a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach in the treatment of both drug and alcohol addiction and related sexual/intimacy concerns. This unique, specialized men’s program addresses the needs of those who may enter rehab specifically for substance abuse/addiction, but who also require an integrated focus on their sexual behavior, sexual trauma history, and/or long-standing problems with developing and maintaining adult intimacy

Rob Weiss, LCSW, CSAT-S on the Substance Abuse and Intimacy Disorders Program

Rob Weiss explains how the Promises program helps those who have had an issue with chronic drug addiction relapse due to co-occurring sexual behavior and/or intimacy issues.

Treatment programs that focus exclusively on drugs and alcohol may inadvertently miss or dismiss strongly correlated sexual/intimacy issues in some men who frequently relapse, leaving these clients with treatment and aftercare plans addressing only half of their problem. As a result, their likelihood of maintaining long-term sobriety lessens, as the desire to return to past experiences of sexual or romantic intensity (and the resulting non-intimacy in their lives) inevitably leads them back to active substance abuse.

The Substance Abuse and Intimacy Disorders Program at Promises Malibu has been designed by internationally renowned expert and author Robert Weiss, LCSW, CSAT-S.

Every new client’s intensive two- to three-day assessment period culminates in a highly individualized care plan addressing his specific relationship to both substances and sexual, romantic and intimacy concerns. The SAID Program incorporates state-of the-art psychological, addiction and trauma reactivity assessment and treatment methods. Evaluations address the impact that past sexual behavior and/or intimacy avoidance may have had on partners, spouses and families, as well as the client’s ability to build and maintain relationships. Spouses of our clients are offered dedicated staff to help them work through the specific challenges endemic to loving men who struggle with these concerns. The SAID Program is also designed to address and incorporate issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity, sexual trauma and relationship fidelity as these very personal matters can often be strong contributors to substance use, abuse, and addiction.
