Stimulant and Sexual Disorders Program at Promises, Malibu

The Stimulant and Sexual Disorders Program (SSDP) at Promises, Malibu is a men’s drug addiction treatment program designed to address addictions to the stimulants (cocaine, crystal meth, etc.) and “party drugs” (GHB, MDMA, ketamine, etc.) that are often taken in combination with sexual behavior.

Currently, there is no U.S. drug rehabilitation facility that utilizes a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach in the treatment of both stimulant drug abuse/addiction and related sexual acting out. Promises’ unique program addresses the needs of men who may enter rehab specifically for stimulant abuse, but who also require an integrated focus on their sexual behavior.

Other treatment programs that focus exclusively on drug abuse may inadvertently dismiss related sexual issues, leaving these men with treatment and aftercare plans addressing only half their problem. As a result, long-term sobriety becomes less likely, as the desire to return to past experiences of sexual intensity inevitably leads back to active drug abuse.

The Stimulant and Sexual Disorders Program at Promises, Malibu has been designed by internationally renowned expert and author, Robert Weiss, MSW, C-SAT.

Every new client’s intensive 2-3 day assessment period culminates in a highly individualized care plan addressing his specific relationship to both drugs and sexual behavior. This program incorporates state-of the-art psychological, addiction, and neurobiological assessment and treatment methods. Evaluations address the impact that past sexual behavior may have had on partners, spouses, and families, as well as the client’s ability to build and maintain relationships. Spouses of our clients are offered specific counseling and education to address challenges such as potential STD transmission, multiple infidelities, and anonymous sex.

Of special note is the topic of post-treatment “sober sex,” something that is often a mystery to those with a long history of stimulant addiction fused with sexual acting out.

Program Parameters

• Males with co-existing stimulant (cocaine, crystal meth, etc.) and/or “party drug” (GHB, MDMA, ketamine, etc.) addictions fused with sexual acting out with prostitutes, anonymous sex, porn, and in sex-focused environment
• Ages: 21 and older
• Five to six week stay depending on the client’s need
• Program size limited to six clients
• Well-appointed Malibu accommodations in the SSD Program private residence

LEADERSHIP

Robert Weiss, MSW, C-SAT is Founding Director of The Sexual Recovery Institute, Los Angeles and Director of Sexual Disorders Services at The Ranch Treatment Center in Nunnelly, Tennessee. A UCLA MSW graduate, Mr. Weiss received extensive post-graduate sexual disorder’s training with addiction author and clinical leader, Dr. Patrick Carnes. Mr. Weiss is author of Cybersex Exposed: Simple Fantasy to Obsession, author of Cruise Control: Understanding Sex Addiction in Gay Men and co-author of the just released, Untangling the Web: Sex, Porn and Fantasy Addiction in the Internet Age, with Dr. Jennifer Schneider, along with numerous peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters.

Mr. Weiss also provides professional training and program development for the US military and multi-addiction treatment centers around the United States, Europe and Asia. Recent media appearances include ESPN, The Today Show, Oprah Winfrey, Larry King Live and Dateline NBC. In a field with few genuine experts, Mr. Weiss is a specialized, knowledgeable and recognizable provider in the field of intimacy, addiction and sexual disorders.

Terry Gatewood, MSW is the Clinical Coordinator of the Stimulant & Sexual Disorders Program at Promises Treatment Center in Malibu, CA.  He previously served as an Addiction Specialist for three years at The Sexual Recovery Institute, Los Angeles. While at SRI, he trained under Robert Weiss, LCSW SRI Founder and Sharon O’Hara, SRI Clinical Director.  He is a proven dynamic educator and skilled clinician. He has extensive experience working with individuals, couples, and groups in the fields of substance abuse and sexual & intimacy disorders.  He brings a unique passion and experience in his work treating clients with the co-addictions of stimulants & sexual disorders.

A Cal State University Los Angeles MSW graduate, Mr Gatewood is trained as a forensic clinical social worker and has over six years of experience working with Crystal Meth addicts in the Gay community of Los Angeles.
