Relapse prevention is a key component of treatment at Promises. Whether a client is struggling with drug or alcohol addiction, an eating disorder or other mental health issues, a comprehensive relapse prevention plan can help them abstain from destructive behaviors, practice healthy coping skills, and get ongoing professional and peer support in recovery.

We know that support can’t just end after rehab is over. The want and need for a substance, to be thinner, or symptoms of mental health issues don’t just go away. A relapse prevention plan gives you the support you need while getting you back to your everyday life.

What’s Included in a Relapse Prevention Plan?

male doctor talks to older male patient about a relapse prevention planRelapse prevention counseling – In individual and group therapy sessions, clients work through the underlying issues that have contributed to drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders and other issues. By learning how these challenges may have driven them to cope through unhealthy means, clients can be aware of these triggers, and when they arise, draw on healthy coping skills instead.

Healthy coping skills – Clients learn a variety of skills they can draw upon in times of stress and that also promote an overall healthy lifestyle. Some of these may include such activities as mindfulness, yoga, fitness, cognitive behavioral techniques, art therapy, and self-care practices like proper nutrition, good sleep hygiene and enjoyable hobbies.

Real-world recovery practice – A relapse prevention plan may also include opportunities to put recovery skills to work in real-world situations. Depending on the Promises treatment center, clients may participate in activities such as movie outings, bowling, dining out and game night.

Support groups – 12-step groups like AA and NA as well as alternatives to the 12 Steps like Refuge Recovery and SMART Recovery can be an important source of accountability and support in recovery. At Promises, clients are introduced to these groups during treatment so that they establish the practice of attending them as part of a comprehensive relapse prevention plan.

Aftercare planning – We work with clients to make sure they have a solid aftercare plan in place when they leave inpatient drug rehab and mental health treatment. Aftercare planning may include scheduling appointments with appropriate mental health and medical professionals for follow-up. It may also include connecting clients with support groups, sober living options, and other recovery resources.
