We are fully invested in our clients’ success, never losing sight of long-term addiction recovery as the ultimate goal. Our unique young adult rehab program is divided into four distinct phases that span a four-month treatment period. We recommend clients enter the program at phase one and move through the phases sequentially for a seamless treatment experience that supports long-term recovery.
Treatment phases include:
Phase One: Stabilization and Inpatient Drug Rehab
Detox and Stabilization – Some clients will begin treatment with medically monitored detox and others will admit directly into inpatient care. During medical detox, our team of physicians and nurses monitors clients around the clock to ensure utmost safety and comfort. Evidence-based medications may be administered to ease withdrawal symptoms and cravings as clinically appropriate.
Residential Treatment – Clients live in home-like cottages with a small group of peers sharing similar struggles. The focus is on developing life skills through intensive treatment, personal responsibility and accountability. Clients attend individual therapy to address specific issues as well as gender-separate group therapy. Our program helps young people gain relapse-prevention skills and address underlying issues that can fuel substance abuse. Clients participate in fitness, chores, goal-setting, 12-step work and experiential activities like psychodrama and Rock to Recovery.Learn about a typical day in our young adult inpatient drug rehab program.
Phase Two: Intensive Outpatient Treatment
Clients attend treatment five days a week for six hours a day. Family therapy is provided as clinically appropriate. Our intensive outpatient program begins easing clients into independent living. Clients learn practical skills like applying for school, finding a job and budgeting. They participate in regular group therapy and individual therapy during the day, and in the evening they attend 12-step meetings of their choice. Clients have more flexibility to visit with friends and loved ones.
Depending on medical necessity, clients can admit to our young adult drug treatment program during this phase if they’ve attended a residential program elsewhere.
Phase Three: Outpatient Treatment
Our outpatient drug rehab program helps clients keep a strong foothold in treatment while easing back into home life or a sober-living environment. Clients build on the work they began in intensive outpatient treatment, focusing more heavily on honing life skills, finding employment or a volunteer position, or returning to school. Our team provides hands-on help with job searches and interviewing, budgeting and applying for community college.
Phase Four: Launch Back Into Life and Society
From day one, our step-down program begins preparing young adults to succeed in sobriety and life after treatment. Phase four finds clients fully launched back into their lives with newly gained resiliency, healthy habits, self-esteem, a sense of purpose, and everyday life skills. Young adults benefit from continued support from our robust alumni network and continuing care services. Already integrated into the recovery community through the 12-step groups they’ve attended during treatment, clients have a strong support system in place.
Approaches and Therapies
Our program is rooted in the 12 steps, and also addresses grief/loss, emotion dysregulation, trauma and other issues that contribute to unhealthy behaviors. Each client moves through the stages of change in a structured sequence that includes:
- Comprehensive assessments
- Medically monitored detox
- Individual, group and family therapy
- Psychoeducational groups
- Psychiatric care
- Equine therapy
- Life skills
- Dialectical-behavior therapy skills
- Creative therapy (music, art and writing)

- Relapse prevention planning
Young Adult Drug Rehab Program Highlights
Wolf experience – Our young adult rehab offers wolf therapy, a highly effective daylong experience that includes hiking, team-building and interacting with wolves in a uniquely spiritual way. The outings are challenging and illuminating, with the wolves offering effective lessons in communication, compassion and engagement.
Intensive family therapy – Every client is assigned a clinician for family therapy. Each week there is a family group led by a licensed marriage and family therapist, a family members-only group led by one of our other clinicians, and a multi-family group. In addition to these groups, our family therapist works with each family separately on specific issues, and clients and their families are invited to participate in a four-day intensive family program.
Rock to Recovery – Each week, professional rock musicians with a personal understanding of addiction and recovery arrive on campus and work with clients in a fun, therapeutic “Rock Academy.” Over the course of just one session, the musicians help residents form a band, write a song and perform the song. Through word and deed, the musicians in Rock to Recovery demonstrate that sobriety can fuel creativity in constructive, meaningful ways. Listen to some samples of music created and recorded by some of our past clients.
Life Skills – At Promises, clients don’t just eliminate drugs and alcohol; they gain the life skills needed for independence. We help them apply for jobs, craft resumes and prepare for job interviews. We also take clients to local community colleges for tours and help them register for classes. Clients are responsible for chores like laundry and grocery shopping. They learn how to manage a budget, prioritizing needs and wants, and making smart choices about spending.
Positive Environment – Clients learn that sobriety can be fun and fulfilling. We emphasize the importance of a sense of community and supportive, positive peers and integrate healthy activities throughout treatment. Some of these include barbeques, cooking classes, yoga, local outings, community meals, and social and 12-step activities with alumni.
Alumni Events – Promises sponsors ongoing recreational and social events for alumni designed to encourage continued engagement with the program and with other graduates. Called “sober fun,” events include movie screenings, barbeques and sports leagues, offered with the goal of demonstrating that being young and sober is not only attainable, but also stimulating and rewarding.
